.DAT file association in Windows XP

Question:

My .dat files have somehow become associated with Nero. How can I remove the
association and have the files with no associated program as it was originally.

Actually, .DAT files can be anything (video, data file or something else.) By default, .dat files are not associated with any application. If you've accidentally associated .DAT files with Nero or Windows Media Player, you can reset the associations to defaults.

Click Start, Run and type this:

reg delete HKCR\.DAT /ve /f

I love you!!!
That was annoying me so bad! I work with data .dat files every day and was pissed when Nero took the file association over. I tried through Folder options to change it, but it only kind of worked (would open in the correct editor, but lost the icon). Thank you very much for that quick fix. I'm still a bit of a Nero hater for that.

in my case, the .DAT file type became associated as a media file, specifically, a video file. so, for example, the NTUSER.DAT file icon was changed to a windows media player icon. this happened after i installed Cowan America's JetAudio. i verified this by looking at the HKCR\.dat registry key, which showed jetaudio.exe listed under the OpenWithList. that's irritating b/c i explicitly de-selected all file types from being associated with jetaudio when i installed the software, yet it went ahead and *modified* registry data that it wasn't supposed to.

i assume it's safe to just delete the .dat file class under HKCR???
